50th Annual Manzanar Pilgrimage/2019 Manzanar At Dusk – In Photos

The 50th Annual Manzanar Pilgrimage has come and gone. It was certainly a big one, both in numbers, with at least 2,500 in attendance, and in significance. After all, we commemorated the first organized Manzanar Pilgrimage 50 years ago (December 27, 1969).

We had some of the people who participated and/organized that first Pilgrimage in attendance, including Warren Furutani, Jim Matsuoka, Mo Nishida, Ron Wakabayashi, and those are just ones I know about. It is very likely that others who were at Manzanar during that cold December day in 1969 were also with us on April 27.

Of course, we felt the presence of Sue Kunitomi Embrey, one of those original Pilgrimage participants in 1969 who co-founded the Manzanar Committee and went to become the driving force behind the creation of the Manzanar National Historic Site. Her spirit is always with us at Manzanar.

We’ll have photographs from professional photographers Geri Ferguson and Mark Kirchner in the coming weeks. But for now, here are some less-than-professional photos from the Pilgrimage and the 2019 Manzanar At Dusk program. Enjoy!
