LOS ANGELES — On March 16, the Manzanar Committee announced that the deadline for entries for their Fifth Annual Student Awards Program, originally March 31, 2020, has been extended to April 24, 2020.
The Student Awards Program is a creative works program in which K-12 students may submit essays, short stories, poetry, works of art, including drawings, collages, posters, and works involving technology, including animation, podcasts, movies, or videos. Categories for submissions include short prose genres, art, and technology.
The awards program will recognize students who demonstrate an understanding of his/her guiding principles of social justice in today’s society. Winning entries will be eligible for prizes up to $100.00.
Manzanar Committee Co-Chair Jenny Chomori noted that with schools closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Committee felt that students might need more time to complete their projects.
“Due to school closures precipitated by safety concerns related to the COVID-19 virus, we have extended the deadline for entries,” she said. “We hope that students can use this unexpected time to continue working on their projects.”
